Share. Out with the old, in with the new. By Scott Collura Full spoilers follow. Oh, Homeland I wish I knew how to quit you! Actually, no, I don’t. But that eight-year-old reference does apply here to some degree. For as invested as I am in the main characters of the Showtime hit, the show’s swings from storytelling highs to lows and back again have become more and more difficult to ride out. Which is probably what it’s like for the people who are around Carrie every day, with her behavioral swings, come to think of it. In its third year, Homeland continued the trend that began the latter part of last season by being frequently uneven and oftentimes over-the-top and just plain unbelievable. In fact, I said at the end of Season 2 and again at the start of this year that the show was essentially a different animal from what showrunners Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa had given us in its excellent freshman run. If Homeland had existed solely as those first 12 episodes, culminating in the self-destruction of Brody via bomb vest, the show would be remembered now and forever as an undeniable classic. It’s the James Dean syndrome. Kill it while it’s young and beautiful and on the top of its game, and it continues on endlessly in that state. Or keep it alive for as long as possible, letting it grow flabby and increasingly ridiculous, and you wind up with Fat Elvis. Which sounds much harsher than it should. Because even Fat Elvis had plenty of pleasures to offer. And so it is with Homeland. Its greatest strength - its characters - held the entire operation together this year, in particular Mandy Patinkin’s Saul, who rose to Acting Director of the CIA in the wake of the Langley bombing in Season 2’s finale. In this new position, Saul realizes that he finally has his chance to affect change in the unending back-and-forth between the U. S. and Iran He’s in the twilight of his.
