Sega and Sony announced that they will work to let Dreamcast users play Internet-based games with Play Station 2 users, the first cross-console networking deal in the gaming industry. Sega abandoned its hardware business and turned its focus onto gaming software, and both companies announced in January that they would work together on online gaming. Today's cross-console announcement is the first product of that collaboration. Sega's Dreamcast was the first advanced gaming console to offer online gaming, and its Sega Net online gaming network has about 800,000 members, almost 30% of Japan's total Dreamcast owners. Sega is still making games for the Dreamcast (new titles are expected in August but it's also working closely with other companies. Sony's Play Station 2 will get its own version of Sega's August game releases, as will PC gamers. Sega is also talking to Microsoft and Nintendo about linking their Xbox and GAMECUBE offerings to the same online network that the Dreamcast and PS2 will share. SAM' S OPINION While this announcement isn't much of a conceptual surprise, it is pretty exciting. Since the Internet bridges PC brand and OS differences, it just makes sense that it can be a bridge for disparate gaming platforms as well. I'm not sure of what technological feats Sega would have to pull to get online games put together that would work simultaneously on a PS2 and an Xbox, say, but I hope that all the gaming console makers will see the benefits of working together and let Sega work out the details. Sega Net apparently allows you to interact with PC gamers already (can any Sega Net user confirm that? so I imagine hooking other consoles into the network can't be too daunting a task if you've got the cooperation of the console makers.
